China opposes textile restrictions

Apr. 7 - The spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce made the
announcement on Thursday.
The US textile and clothing industry asked the US Government to re-impose
quotas on 14 categories of clothing to protect US manufacturers from
Chinese imports.
The spokesman says that the move counters trade liberalization and smacks
of protectionism.
Meanwhile, China also objects to new measures taken by the European Union
against imports of Chinese textiles.
The European Commission has published guidelines clarifying what it would
consider safeguards against textile and clothing imports from China.
The guidelines set up alert zones for each category of Chinese textiles
imports. If these thresholds are reached, the EC will undertake an
investigation.
Informal consultations with China will allow it to provide sufficient
remedy but, if the remedy is insufficient, safeguards can be invoked.
