26.1 million Chinese live below poverty line

Chinanews, Apr. 3 - Since the Reform and Opening Policy, China has
organized and carried out large-scale, effective campaigns to alleviate
poverty. At present, 26.1 million people in China still live below the
poverty line; the cause of fighting poverty still has a long way to go.
In an effort to help this large group of people cast off their poverty,
government at all levels continues to increase capital investment in
efforts. The central government is to add another 800 million yuan (96.7
million US dollars) into an anti-poverty fund that will reach 13 billion
yuan (1.57 billion US dollars). Local governments, especially provincial
level governments, also continue to increase their investments. The
central government has arranged 100 million yuan (some 12 million US
dollars) as an interest subsidy fund for poverty alleviation loans to the
200 poorest counties.
There are also various efforts coming from society. According to the
latest statistics, total poverty alleviation funds from governmental and
party departments and developed regions on the eastern coast have reached
15 billion yuan (some 1.81 billion US dollars), exceeding the total
amount contributed by the central government. In China, various social
forces are guided, motivated and organized to fight for the poor.
