College students try to look for rich marriage partners

www.chinanews.cn 2007-04-29 11:22:29

Chinanews, Guangzhou, Apr. 29 C According to Information Times, college
students in Guangzhou intend to choose partners in marriage through the
help of matchmaking agencies. Experts point out that these students hope
to look for partners that earn high salaries.
Cao Guotang, associate professor of the Psychology Department of
Guangzhou University, revealed that most college students in Guangzhou
intend to look for partners early, but they often fail to keep a long
partnership.
Currently more and more students are influenced by western lifestyle and
want to hunt for wealthy partners in order to enjoy good life quality
rather than to find true love. Wu Peiling, manager of Guangzhou Youth
Matchmaking Agency, said that in 2006 more students than ever before came
to seek their help. But she also pointed out that these students hope to
find rich marriage partners.
A survey launched among students in 12 colleges and universities shows
that more than 30% of respondents think dating while studying in college
may affect their studies, but 53.2% of them also reveal that they will go
dating if they find appropriate partners.

Olympic torch relay planned route

www.chinanews.cn 2007-04-27 09:29:48

(Source: Xinhua/BOCOG)

The design of Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch is unveiled on April 26, 2007 in
Beijing.

Beijing, April 27 - The Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay will traverse
the longest distance, cover the greatest area and include the largest
number of people, according to plans released Thursday night during a
grand ceremony held in the China Millennium Monument in Beijing by BOCOG,
the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of XXIX Olympiad.
The planned route, revealed by Luo Gan, member of the standing committee
of the Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee, and who was joined by
International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge, would last 130
days and travel 137,000 km. And the Beijing 2008 Olympic torch design was
unveiled by State Councilor and BOCOG first vice-president Chen Zhili,
with IOC Coordination Commission Chairman Hein Verbruggen alongside.
"As the prelude to the Beijing Olympic Games, the Beijing 2008 Olympic
Torch Relay is one of the most important ceremonies and a major means to
spread and promote the Olympic spirit," said BOCOG President Liu Qi.
"As one of the grand ceremonies for the Beijing Olympic Games, the Torch
Relay of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games has set its theme as the 'Journey
of Harmony' and the slogan 'Light the Passion, Share the Dream'."
Liu said the torch will be passed in all the five continents around the
world and throughout China. It is our hope that the Beijing Olympic Torch
Relay will once again spread the Olympic spirit all over the world and
demonstrate Chinese people's passion for the Olympic Movement.
The relay will showcase the people, beautiful sceneries, cultural
heritage in countries, regions and cities along the relay route. It will
enhance mutual understanding and friendship among people of different
countries. Moreover, it will further expound the rich implication of our
theme slogan "One World One Dream".
We are sending invitations to people all over the world to share the joy
and glory brought by the Beijing Olympic Games, Liu added.
"By traveling along the historic 'Silk Road', a symbol of ancient trade
links between China and the rest of the world, crossing the five
continents and going to new places, the Beijing 2008 Torch Relay will, as
its theme says, be a 'Journey of Harmony', bringing friendship and
respect to people of different nationalities, races and creeds,"
commented IOC President Rogge. "I have no doubt the Beijing 2008 Olympic
Torch Relay will leave many extraordinary memories and create new dreams
for people around the world."
Liu Peng, minister of the State General Administration of Sport and
executive president of BOCOG also attended the ceremony. And the ceremony
was presided over by Wang Qishan, mayor of Beijing and executive
president of BOCOG.
The Planned Route
Validated by IOC, the Olympic Flame will be lit in Olympia, Greece
according to tradition on March 25, 2008. From March 25 - 30, the Torch
Relay will travel across Greece, ending at the Panathinaiko Stadium, the
site of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. After the handover
ceremony in the stadium, the Olympic Flame will arrive in Beijing on
March 31, 2008. In Beijing, a ceremony will be held for the arrival of
the flame into China and Beijing 2008 Olympic torch relay will commence.
The cities along the route are:
Beijing; Almaty; Istanbul; St.Petersburg; London; Paris; San Francisco;
Buenos Aires; Dar Es Salaam; Muscat; Islamabad; Mumbai; Bangkok; Kuala
Lumpur; Jakarta; Canberra; Nagano; Seoul; Pyongyang; Ho Chi Minh City;
Taipei; Hong Kong; Macao; Hainan Province (Sanya, Wuzhishan, Wanning,

Henan Province (Shangqiu, Kaifeng, Zhengzhou, Luoyang, Anyang); Hebei
Province (Shijiazhuang, Qinhuangdao, Tangshan); Tianjin; and Beijing.
One of the highlights of this leg will be the attempt to bring the
Olympic Flame to the highest peak in the world Mt. Qomolangma. During the
arrival ceremony for the flame into China on March 31, 2008, one of the
lanterns with the Olympic Flame will be kept aside. The torchbearer team
will then attempt to take the Flame to the highest peak on a day in May
that presents the best climatic conditions for the ascent.
Design
The design of the Torch takes advantage of Chinese artistic heritage and
technological expertise. The design of the aluminum torch features
traditional scrolls and "Lucky Cloud". It stands 72 centimeters high and
weighs 985 grams.
The Torch incorporates technological innovations to be able to remain lit
in winds of up to 65 kilometers-an-hour and lit in rain of up to 50
millimeters-an-hour. And the torch can keep burning for 15 minutes. Other
technological advancements prevent color discoloration and corrosion
around the cone from which the Flame burns. The Torch construction is
also environmentally-conscious. The materials are recyclable, and the
propane fuel meets environmental requirements.
"The Beijing Olympic Torch boasts both distinctive Chinese cultural
features, and technical excellence and sophisticated materials. It will
carry the friendship that Chinese people extend to the world and the
Olympic spirit to the five continents and to the peak of Mt. Qomolangma,"
said BOCOG President Liu Qi.
"The torch and the Olympic Flame are symbols which embody the Olympic
Values of excellence, respect and friendship. They inspire us to be the
best we can be in all that we do," added IOC President Jacques Rogge.
"The magnificent design of the torch for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch
Relay will also add a very unique Chinese flavour to the relay, as the
'Clouds of Promise' carry the Beijing Games' message to the world."
The Torch casting was designed by the Lenovo Creative Centre and the
burning system inside the Torch was designed by China Aerospace Science
and Industry Group.
Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay Worldwide Partners
The Worldwide Partners for Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay are:
Coca-Cola, Samsung and Lenovo, which will provide financial and service
support for the smooth operation of the torch relay. They are the highest
tier sponsors of sponsorship program for Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay
and are granted a series of marketing rights and benefits related to the
torch relay.

Former Russian president Yeltsin dies

www.chinanews.cn 2007-04-24 09:33:38

(Source: Xinhua)

An undated file photo shows former Russian President Boris Yeltsin and
his wife Naina in the Great Wall in Beijing.

MOSCOW, April 24 - Russia's first President Boris Yeltsin has died at the
age of 76, a Kremlin spokesmen said Monday.
President Vladimir Putin has telephoned the widow Naina Yeltsin to offer
sympathies.
The former president "died a sudden death in Moscow on Monday," the
Itar-Tass news agency quoted Kremlin source as saying.
"Today, April 23, at 15:45 Moscow time, Russia's first President Boris
Nikolayevich Yeltsin died at the Central Clinical Hospital. The death was
caused by the progressing cardiovascular polyorganic insufficiency,"
Itar-Tass quoted head of the presidential administration's medical center
Sergei Mironov as saying.
The White House mourned Yeltsin as "a historic figure" and offered
condolences to his relatives, according to reports reaching here.
Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, also Yeltsin's once main
opponent, has sent condolences to Naina, according to Itar-Tass.
"I addressed Naina and the whole family. I feel sincerely sorry for you
and share your grief," Gorbachev was quoted as saying. "Life itself made
out paths cross and we had to act at a time when dramatic changes were
taking place in the country."
"There were many things where we disagreed and there were big
disagreements, and this affected political processes, but at this moment
I express my deep sympathy for the Yeltsin family," Gorbachev was quoted
as saying.
Born on Feb. 1, 1931, Yeltsin worked as construction worker, communist
party official and served as Russia's first democratically elected
president since 1991. He led to the collapse of the Soviet Union.
He won a second term in an election in 1996 but transferred power to
Putin and resigned from the post on Dec. 31, 1999. He then kept a low
profile.
Yeltsin graduated in 1955 from the Urals Polytechnical Institute in
Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg), where he was born. He joined the
Communist Party in 1961.
He became the first secretary of the Party's Sverdlovsk district central
committee in 1976 and a member of the Party's central committee in 1981.
In 1985, he was pointed as chief the Party's Moscow branch and in 1986,
an alternative member of the Party's top decision making body, the
Politburo of the central committee.
He was forced to resign from the party leadership in 1988 after
challenging Communist hard-liners and criticized Gorbachev's reforms. He
was appointed as a deputy chairman of a construction committee.
Yeltsin resigned from the Communist Party in 1990 and became Russia's
first democratically elected president in the popular election in 1991.

Gunman kills 32, commits suicide on US campus

www.chinanews.cn 2007-04-17 09:30:29

Chinanews, Apr.17 - A gunman opened fire in a Virginia Tech dorm and
then, two hours later, shot up a classroom across campus Monday, killing
32 people in the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history. The gunman
committed suicide, bringing the death toll to 33, AP reported.
Virginia Tech President Charles Steger said authorities believed that the
shooting at the dorm was a domestic dispute and mistakenly thought the
gunman had fled the campus.
Investigators offered no motive for the attack. The gunman's name was not
immediately released, and it was not known if he was a student.
A White House spokesman said President Bush was horrified by the rampage
and offered his prayers to the victims and the people of Virginia.

Foreign banks see a surge of RMB deposit

www.chinanews.cn 2007-04-12 08:58:05

Chinanews, Shanghai, Apr. 12 C During the first quarter of this year,
foreign banks in Shanghai saw a surge in their Renminbi deposit service,
with the balance of Renminbi deposits in these banks increasing by 57.1%
from last year, 26.4 percentage points more than the growth rate of last
year.
The outstanding bullish performance in the securities markets has drawn
many people to take their money out of banks and put it in the stock
markets. Although the central bank raised the interest rate last month,
both the fixed and current deposits declined in the first quarter, with
Renminbi savings dropping by 3.685 billion yuan.
Statistics from the central bank show that as Renminbi appreciation
quickens, companies and residents in Shanghai are unwilling to keep
foreign currencies. In March, the foreign currency deposits declined
sharply by 886 million US dollars in a single month.
At the same time, the amount of newly released loans in Renminbi and
foreign currencies both hit a historical high point. During the first
quarter, the amount of new loans equalled to nearly half of the total new
loans issued last year.

China enters a negative consumption era

www.chinanews.cn 2004-12-10 15:31:32

Chinanews, Dec 9 - After the Peoples Bank of China adjusted mortgage
rates not long ago, thein-debt millionaireshave become a new topic of
discussion in Chinese metropolises. Experts point out that China has
entered anegative consumption era, with credit consumption as a new
symbol of fashionable lifestyle. Among rapidly changing consumption
habits, many young urban professionals nowadays tend tospend
tomorrows income today.
Credit consumption was not something to be proud of in the old Chinese
tradition, which dictated common people to live within their means. In
the past, people unable to make ends meet could not gain respect from
others as debt was often associated with gambling or alcoholism. After
more than two decades of reform and liberalization, the nations
consumers have drastically changed their viewpoint. Many urban and rural
residents, especially young urban dwellers, are becoming more and more
inclined to spend tomorrows income today to live a better life.
Under the current market economy, credit consumption is normal and to
some extent inevitable. The government has issued a series of policies
and measures to stimulate the nations consumer market, winning praise
in both urban and rural areas, notably from young urbanites. According to
a report by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the average debt
ratio in Beijing and Shanghai families has reached 155% and 122%,
respectively, higher than Americas 115% in 2003. The debt ratio has
reached 90% for residents in some medium-sized cities, where money is
borrowed to purchase houses, cars and large, durable consumer goods.
Since the expansion of the consumer credit system in 1998, outstanding
consumer loans have grown twenty fold compared from sixteen years ago, to
over 1.7 trillion yuan by this June, accompanied by growth rates higher
than any other country in the world.
Many consumers believe that increasing family budget deficits are a sign
of active credit consumption, which depends on borrowed money from
financial institutions. This expands domestic demand as well as improves
the standard of living of both urban and rural residents. The emergence
and development of consumer loans track an economys growth. In the
microcosmic view, it results from spending whenever consumption is
desired, by borrowing if necessary. From a macrocosmic view, it is the
inevitable product of shifting from a sellers market to a buyers
market when the economy develops into a certain stage.
While presenting a challenge to the Chinese money management tradition,
credit consumption, in the broader sense, is a positive sign of social
progress.

26.1 million Chinese live below poverty line

www.chinanews.cn 2005-04-04 14:17:24

Chinanews, Apr. 3 - Since the Reform and Opening Policy, China has
organized and carried out large-scale, effective campaigns to alleviate
poverty. At present, 26.1 million people in China still live below the
poverty line; the cause of fighting poverty still has a long way to go.
In an effort to help this large group of people cast off their poverty,
government at all levels continues to increase capital investment in
efforts. The central government is to add another 800 million yuan (96.7
million US dollars) into an anti-poverty fund that will reach 13 billion
yuan (1.57 billion US dollars). Local governments, especially provincial
level governments, also continue to increase their investments. The
central government has arranged 100 million yuan (some 12 million US
dollars) as an interest subsidy fund for poverty alleviation loans to the
200 poorest counties.
There are also various efforts coming from society. According to the
latest statistics, total poverty alleviation funds from governmental and
party departments and developed regions on the eastern coast have reached
15 billion yuan (some 1.81 billion US dollars), exceeding the total
amount contributed by the central government. In China, various social
forces are guided, motivated and organized to fight for the poor.

Linzhi, Tibet takes tourism to new heights

www.chinanews.cn 2005-03-28 14:32:28

Chinanews, Mar. 27 - Linzhi area, haled as "Tibet's Jiangnan (south of
the Yangtze River)," has strived to develop unique tourist resorts with
distinctive ethnic features, create new tourist routes, and build itself
up as a world-class tourism hotspot in the "Roof of the World." The area
received 320,000 visitors from home and abroad and earned more than 72
million yuan in 2004.
Linzhi lies in the southeast of Tibet, more than 3000 meters high on
average. Tibetans, Monba, Lhola and other minority groups with their
unique customs populate the area. The geography and human diversity make
this rarely visited, sparsely populated land an ideal destination for
traveling, sightseeing, scientific research and adventure. This one small
area is home to some of the greatest geographical discoveries of the 20th
century: the world's largest canyon, Brahmaputra Canyon, the best
preserved primeval forest in the world, Zibagou State Natural Protection
Zone, Sejila and Basongcuo State Forest Parks, and Yigong State Geologic
Park. All are invaluable resources for building a world-class tourism
destination.
LInzhi has begun the multi-faceted Xiangbala Tourism Project, with 6
unique tourist routes, 8 tourist resorts and more than 50 scenic spots.
The innovative project has stimulated the development of 4 major tourist
routes in the Niyang River strip, Basongcuo State 4A Tourist Resorts,
Lulang Forest and Brahmaputra Canyon Ecotourism Area, integrated
scattered tourist spots into key products, accelerated construction of
supporting facilities and upgraded the tourism industry of the area.
Moreover, Linzhi has strengthened marketing potential by holding programs
with unique themes, such as the Peach Blossom Festival, Azalea Festival
and Kampot New Year.

Bank of China to be forex market maker

www.chinanews.cn 2005-03-16 16:35:21

Chinanews.com, Mar. 16 - The China Foreign Exchange Trade Center (CFETC)
signed an official cooperative agreement with the Bank of China (BOC)
yesterday. According to this agreement, the BOC would become the market
maker for CFETC's foreign currency trade in May.
Li Yu, vice-president of CFETC, said that the inter-bank market would
begin to buy and sell foreign currencies in May as a crucial component of
the basic construction of China's financial market. This business would
help to create depth in the inter-bank foreign exchange market. In
addition, it would benefit medium and small sized financial institutions
that have no direct access to the foreign exchange market due to risk
rating and company scale restrictions. By expanding China's foreign
exchange market and creating better measures of its supply and demand,
this move would help improve the mechanism that determines the Renminbi
exchange rate, as well as serve as a trial balloon and decision-making
basis for the full convertibility of RMB.
The BOC will initially introduce eight currency pairs: USD-HKD, USD-JPY,
USD-GBP, USD-AUD (Australian Dollar), USD-SHF (Swiss Franc), USD-CAD
(Canadian Dollar), USD-EUR and EUR-JPY.
As a market maker, the BOC will actively participate in trading the
above-mentioned eight foreign currency pairs in the CFETC. Meanwhile, the
center will choose the BOC's worldwide foreign currency payment system
and network as its main channel for capital settlement in the forex
market.

Over 350 foreign schools compete for students in Beijing

www.chinanews.cn 2005-02-28 14:49:32

The 10th China International Education Exhibition Tour opened at the
World Trade Center in Beijing on February 26th. Held over two days, the
participants consisted of more than 350 universities and educational
institutes coming 27 countries and regions that included the United
States, England, France, and Australia. The exhibition attracted many
local students and their parents, who came for consultations and talks. A
highlight of the exhibition could be found at the Holland zone, where
consultation staff who were dressed in distinctive Dutch costumes were
enthusiastically giving explanations to the visitors and handing out
marketing brochures.

Chinanews, Feb. 28 - The first two-day session of the 10th China
International Education Exhibition Tour opened in Beijing's World Trade
Center yesterday. The annual "battle for student recruits" among the over
350 foreign schools and other educational institutions officially started.
Over 350 schools and educational institutions from 27 countries and
regions, including the UK, France, Holland, Ireland, Canada, the United
States, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Italy, Switzerland, South
Korea, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong, participated in today's education
exhibition.
This year's education exhibition is different from the previous ones in
that, in addition to foreign universities, technology institutes,
preparatory schools for universities and vocational colleges and schools,
a number of language schools, high schools and cooperative programs by
Chinese institutions and foreign counterparts also took part in this
education exhibition. One high school from Australia even displayed a
Chinese-style slogan reading "all our graduates last year had excellent
exam results, better than the admission requirements of the University of
Melbourne ".
In the education exhibition, officials from the embassies of the UK, the
United States, Australia, New Zealand, Holland, Ireland and Ukraine took
turns and gave on-spot introductions on their countries' policies on
recruiting overseas students and the latest visa-related information to
those "prospective overseas students".

RMB popular among China's neighbors

www.chinanews.cn 2005-02-25 14:14:14

Chinanews, Beijing, Feb. 24(By Liu Yuying and Wen Yang) - The People's
Bank of China pointed out in its "Monetary Policy Report for the Fourth
Quarter of 2004" issued today that, because of China's increasing
economic strength, its rapidly developing economic and trade ties with
other countries as well as the long-term stability of its currency, the
RMB is being accepted by more and more business entities among China's
neighboring countries and regions.
The report revealed that the RMB has been widely used in border markets
for small amount transactions as the denominator for valuation, payment
and settlement. Outbound circulation of the RMB continued to rise.
In recent years, the People's Bank of China has signed settlement
agreements on border trade with Vietnam, Mongolia, Laos, Nepal, Russian,
North Korea and the Kyrgyz Republic. Such agreements allowed the RMB and
the currencies of these neighboring countries to be used for border trade
settlements. Under these agreements, commercial banks from these
countries can open RMB accounts for bank settlement services and currency
exchange services in the border regions. The same rights were granted to
Chinese commercial banks in the border area. The agreements also allow
commercial banks from all signatory countries to transport large amounts
of RMB across the border for clearing after registering at the customs.

Inflation not a big concern for China this year

www.chinanews.cn 2005-02-22 14:48:34

Chinanews, Beijing, Feb. 21 (By Liu Changzhong) - According to an expert
report, the international oil price will fall and remain steady in 2005
and the Chinese economy will continue to stay in an expansionary mode and
will not see much structural changes. As a result, inflation will
probably not occur in China this year. The Chinese economy is currently a
surplus economy that features more supply than demand except in the
energy field that is complicated by many geopolitical factors. The
inflation rate this year is estimated at about 3%, slightly lower than
2004's 3.9%.
The international economic research centre of the school of economics
under the Beijing Industry and Commerce University (BICU) and the
economic institute of Nankai University recently put out a report on the
2004 to 2005 development prospects of the national economy. The report
points to the abundant labor and capital supply and increasing market
demand as the stabilizing forces for the Chinese economy. The overall
living standard in China is still low, leaving much of the demand for
housing and automobiles unmet. An annual natural population growth of
7,700,000 people is also constantly creating new consumption demand.
Moreover, demand for exports continues to expand.
According to the report, the Chinese economy is in a rapid
industrialization and internationalization phase. The enormous growth
momentum brought by the industrialization and the open economic structure
will not drastically slow down, barring catastrophic events such as wars.
The lagging effects from the large-scale investment boom in 2003 and 2004
will be felt and the current economic growth is unlikely to slow down.
The report also pointed out that China's employment situation would still
be stern in 2005. The current economic structure of the Chinese economy
is not expected to undergo dramatic changes, neither are the employment
structure and employment scale. In this context, also considering the
lagging effect of the macroeconomic regulations and control, investment
growth will slow down.
