hi,ipsi()

The Chinese tone sandhis is complicated, indeed.I wonder if you know
“五度表音法”?That's the first tone is 55,second is 35, third is 214 and the forth is 51.

Anyway, i'll try to explain it.

In fact, tone sandhis mainly occurs on the third tone characters . There are 3 situations.

1. two third tone characters are together:
1.1 the former one becomes the second tone ,which is 35.
e.g.
你好 水果 了解 (214+214)→(35+214)

1.2 if the latter one is no-tone (轻声)but originally the third tone too, the former one
become the second tone (35) or half third tone (21)
e.g.
等等 想起 (214+neutral tone) → (35+neutral tone)
姐姐 奶奶 (214+neutral tone) → (21+neutral tone)

2. three third tone characters are together, two situations, which are related to the arrangement
of the words :
2.1 很勇敢 小老虎 (214+214+214)→ (21+35+214)
you see, 勇敢 and 老虎 are headwords.
2.2 展览馆 管理组 (214+214+214) → (35+35+214)
you see, 展览 and 管理 are attributes

3. before non-third tone characters, the third tone should become 21.
e.g.
首都 北京 (214+55) → (21+55)
海洋 语言 (214+35) → (21+35)
土地 鼓励 (214+51) → (21+51)
尾巴 宝贝 (214+neutral tone) → (21+neutral tone)

Difficult? It doesn't matter. If you have chance to speak chinese with native speakers, i think
you will grasp the Chinese tone sandhis sooner or later.

Do you think if I gave an incentive to do it like 500 or 1,000 yuan, would people be more
interested in doing it?

Haha, well, if I think about how much I can earn per hour as a programmer, multiplied by the
number of hours it would take to complete such a project, then my answer is still no For
comparison, pinyinput (which was a relatively small and simple project), only took about 200 hours
including research, design, development and testing. Back then, I also had both the time and the
desire to write such a program.

roddy -

200 hours is a lot of time. Was there nothing on telly? You should have said, I'd have lent you
some HBO.

I hadn't imagined it would take that long - all the more kudos for making it available to us all.

imron -

Quote:

As opposed to now where you only have the time but not the desire

Well I don't have the time now either (have you noticed how long its been between updates?)

Quote:

I hadn't imagined it would take that long

Haha, well then you'd be like most people (programmers included) when they estimate how long it
takes to write a piece of software. Actually, if you only talk about actual coding time for
Pinyinput, then it would have been about half that. The 200 hours also includes time hunting
around for, and reading the appropriate API documentation, time spent making little test programs
to get a better understanding of APIs (which are poorly documented), time spent in Photoshop
making the icons etc etc. It's the little things like these that people's brains tend to gloss
over when doing estimates that together all add up to a significant amount of time.

I'm sure there was stuff on telly, but not having an easy and consistent way to type pinyin was
something that had been bugging me for ages - not that I even write in Pinyin much at all, but
it's just for those few occasions, it really bugged me to have to open up a web browser, or some
other program just to get the tones.

Hi imrom and Roddy:

I just joined this forum a few days ago. I came to it through a Google search on "Structure of
Chinese Characters" and have been fascinated with many of the postings. I read all the threads to
Pinyinput IME today. Thank you, Roddy, for starting the forum -- and, imron, for being Admin and
for writing Pinyinput. I used to do a lot of bilingual word processing before the onset of
Unicode, which wiped out all my old "double byte" Chinese word processing systems. I am gingerly
getting back into it, under Unicode. I know several Chinese transliteration systems. I also know
MS Office Suite very well (including the underlying VBA) and will want to try your Pinyinput soon,
imron. I'm primarily a math/science editor and applications programmer (among other things). I try
to stay away from the API's and IME's as much as possible, but for Pinyinput, I might just cross
the line, imron. Wish me luck -- my laptop runs on Windows XP and I don't have a lot of free space
left on my hard drive.

By the way, what's the difference between "Unicode", "Unicode endian", and "UFT-8"? Where can I
find out?

imron -

Quote:

my laptop runs on Windows XP and I don't have a lot of free space left on my hard drive.

Not to worry, Pinyinput is quite small, and takes up next to no room on your hard disk (~160kb)

Regarding Unicode and the different encoding schemes, endianess and other things, here is a good
place to start.

Tinov -

Hi all,

Pinyinput is great, but would it run on the linux version of the Asus Eee PC? If not, is there
anyone out there looking to make a version that will?

Thanks

Tinov.

imron -

Sorry, Pinyinput is currently Windows only.

I listen to both Cantonese songs and Mandarin songs (mostly from Taiwan).

What's the market of those songs in Asia? Is Mandarin song got a bigger market than Cantonese song?

It seems, Mandarin song MTV/KTV "video" is done much better than Cantonese song. (without
considering the individual personal preference) There is some obvious different in the production.

in case most of you didnt notice where i posted this website in another thread, i'll post it here:
www.mmmppp333.com it has many audio files for (chinese & foreign) novels, legends, xiangsheng
performances, etc.. lots of good stuff. i hope it can benefit many of you.

now with that offered, i'd like to ask something of you all. the novels on that site are mostly
single-narrator audios. i'm wondering if anyone has found a place to get stories told by different
people playing each character. such as radio shows as we have in the west. i'm sure something like
this must be out there in the chinese world.

it brings a whole other dimension and interest into the audio, with different voices and
background sounds and whatnot. the single-narrator, no background sounds and animations make the
audio kind of dry.

looking for some radio type stories. anything? a similar thing would be like christian radio
program my mother listened to in the car sometimes called "adventures in odyssey". not that i'm
looking for religious stuff. but its just an example of the type of thing i'd like.

"How many" depends on "for What".

One never learns enough characters, so we have 活到老,学到老(You learn while you live).
In the campaigns to eliminate illiteracy in China after the Liberation , 1500 - 2000 characters
was the goal.

can't quantify how many English words I know, but I know more than enough to read a newspaper,
academic paper, and writing a high level essay in university. So what is my point? I think the
number of characters or words a person needs to know depends on what their objective is.

Barton Fink -

Hello Everyone!

I have just had an interview with a company called 'Reach to Teach'. I have done some preliminary
research on them by just searching google, and the feedback seems to be good. The interviewer was
very professional and thorough, and generally I was impressed.

However, from my readings of varous web forums, I have concluded that it is generally a good idea
to be weary of agencies like this. Can anyone give me the lowdown on this company, and/or
experiences that they have had with them?

This would be very helpful as, if I get accepted (which I will find out in the next few days), I
believe I will go through them to acquire my first ESL teaching position in China.

Much thanks in advance,

Barton Fink.

Chinese Class - ZDT: Unihan support and 3D flashcards - From Beijing Chinese School.com > Learning Chinese > Chinese Computing and Technology > ZDT Flashcards Forum

ZDT: Unihan support and 3D flashcards

Hello,

Much as josvanouwerkerk, I've been wanting to develop an application like ZDT, but with added
functionality for 1) Unihan dictionary look ups and 2) an enhanced flashcard view. Unihan support
would make it more like CquickTrans and Wenlin, and enhanced flashcards would make me a very happy
camper. Here's what I had in mind:

1) Unihan support
I've found a mixture of ZDT, CQuickTrans and Wenlin to be my current *almost* ideal setup for
learning Mandarin. Wenlin is great for breaking down characters, CQuickTrans is superb for
referencing all available free data (Unihan and CEDICT), and ZDT is wonderful for its flashcard
capabilities, its openness and its portability. What I would like is for an additional "Unihan"
view that would simply list all of the characters whenever a phrase is selected (from either the
ZDT dictionary or from a category), much like CQuickTrans's behavior. Another "Hanzi detail" view
would show pertinent info for one selected character (strokes, radical, pinyin, UTF, definition,
frequency).

My questions for this item are :
* Is there any project currently under way to import Unihan.txt?
* If not, could it be done by pretty much duplicating the functionality for importing and
  accessing the CEDICT data?

2) Enhanced flashcards
Maybe I'm dreaming here, but I'd like to see flashcards in a 3D view, much as if I were handling
an actual "card" in my hands. Perhaps even a "flash cube" would be better : hanzi on one side, and
on the others: pinyin, English, radicals, an image, hints, who knows.

My question for this item is :
* What would be the preferred 3D technology? I've got some prior experience with OpenGL, but am
bedazzled at the state of things for accomplishing this with Java and SWT. Should I consider
LWJGL, JOGL or gljava? Or something else? IBM's got a very nice tutorial called "Building and
firing a BB gun" that seems to do just what I need. Is this the right way? As for Java3D, it
appears to be linked to Swing/AWT, so that's pretty much out of the question (I think!).
* The chosen technology should allow for the 3D contents to be manipulated with SWT widgets:
which of the three above mentioned methods should I use for this purpose?

So are my wishes...

I've been programming for over 10 years now, have got lots of C experience (dating), some OpenGL,
some Java and some database and DAL know how. I've been reading up on Spring lately and seeing how
ZDT apparently makes use of many technologies I'd like to be more at ease with, it seemss to be
the ideal project to start tinkering with.

If Chris is reading this, please tell me how you would prefer to see 3D implemented in ZDT.

Thanks so much to all who have contributed for such a nice piece of software.

I've just completed part 2 of the IBM DevWorks demo, which only requires the "experimental
org.eclipse.opengl binding" (and it works!). However the Eclipse SWT OpenGL page mentions the
following:

Quote:

Please note that this binding is experimental and subject to change. If you are using SWT 3.2 or
newer then you should use the supported OpenGL binding that is included in the SWT package instead.

But I couldn't get anything working without the experimental library! Perhaps my setup is not
right?

I am so confused.

jp

jpvalois -

Well, looks like I'm the only poster in this thread...might as well go on!

I've been pursuing my 3D flashcard activities. Primo, looks like the current SWT package is
probably all that's needed for my purposes (no JOGL or LWJGL or gljava required). Secundo, the
TextRenderer would be quite helpful I believe, but the class seems liked to AWT. Tertio, from my
current understanding, it appears as if the best way to accomplish my goal of mapping text to a
face will be to first write text to a memory image, and then texture map the image to the surface.

If anybody out there knows anything about this stuff, please let me know if the following makes
any sense (first step is simply loading an image into a texture - sadly it's not working yet: my
OpenGL is quite rusty):

Quote:

import org.eclipse.swt.examples.openglview.ImageDataUtil;
import org.eclipse.swt.graphics.Image;
import org.eclipse.swt.graphics.ImageData;
...

ImageData image;
image = new ImageData("d:/tmp/helloswt.bmp");
image = ImageDataUtil.convertImageData(this.image);

GL.glGenTextures(2, TEXTURES);
GL.glBindTexture(GL.GL_TEXTURE_2D, TEXTURES[0]);
GL.glTexParameteri(GL.GL_TEXTURE_2D, GL.GL_TEXTURE_MAG_FILTER, GL.GL_NEAREST);
GL.glTexParameteri(GL.GL_TEXTURE_2D, GL.GL_TEXTURE_MIN_FILTER, GL.GL_NEAREST);
GL.GL_TEXTURE_WRAP_S, GL.GL_REPEAT);

GL.glTexImage2D(GL.GL_TEXTURE_2D, 0, GL.GL_RGB, image.width, image.height, 0, GL.GL_RGB,
GL.GL_UNSIGNED_BYTE, image.data);

About Unihan, it's been adapted for Chinese Perakun, the Firefox plugin, so no reason why the same
can't be done for ZDT. See here:

jpvalois -

Thanks for the link to the Firefox add-on. I've just installed it and it works quite well.

As for unihan, I've already some experience with loading the data (unihan.txt) into a database;
the challenge will be to make it all fit nicely into ZDT (using hsqldb + spring).

jp

Hey Jean-Philippe. Sorry for not replying. I've been on vacation since Christmas and just got
back. I think your idea sounds great...much more ambitious then anything I could ever do. So, I
don't have any 3D programming experience, but I could definitely come up with a Unihan plugin that
you could use. Send me an email (fongcn at gmail dot com) and maybe we can collaborate.

Chris

semantic nuance -

而又 simply means 'and'. Yes, you can take out 而 and use 又 alone in this case.

skylee -

而又 = and also

From these complicated and also contradicting facts and statistics it is difficult to reach a
conclusion.

Quote:

am i allowed to take out 而 and just say 又?

Yes you could.

82riceballs -

謝謝!

rootfool -

I have some different opinion.

而又 contains the meaning that the two words connect by it are contradict each other.Such
as:古老而现代的城市/熟悉而陌生的面孔。Even chinese can make mistake when they
using this conjunction, that is,connecting words which only have coordinate relation. But
"错综复杂" contains the meaning of "tangel/jumble",so it contradict "相互矛盾".That's why
I think you couldn't omit "而" in here.

It's just a personal opinion.

I agree with the problem of exaggerated 3rd tone pronunciation. I have noticed it leads to some
foreign learners pronouncing words such as 喜欢 or 改变 as xi2huan1 or gai2bian4 because they
try to compress the entire "dipping" noise instead of pronouncing it simply as a flat low tone.
The 3rd tone, if you're going to pronounce it in the "dipping" way, at its lowest point, should
reach to the very bottom of your vocal register(so it sounds almost like you're croaking).
However, in normal speech, you should just pronounce it as a flat tone that is lower relative to
the syllables in front of and after it.

I also think you should try making a recording of the wordlist againstwind provided, as syllables
in isolation are a bit unnatural.

Hey Hero Doug,

Et al. I think getting a good teacher and training your ear to hear the difference in the tones so
that you can correct your self when you say it wrong is the best way.
And there is a neat free website.
I agree though it is the combination where the tones can be tricky.
http://www.shufawest.us/language/tonedrill.html

http://www.shufawest.us/language/tonedrill.html

yeah try it. It's pretty nifty.

have fun,

Pravit >> I like the suggestion of pronouncing the third tone a flat low tone. It seem's to work
well since you can sort of hear the voice dropping as well. I think this idea will come in handy.

And I know that I won't be saying the tones by themselves very much, but I rushed the book the
first time so I'm going to do it right this time around. The first lesson is really the only one
that has solo tones.

When I get to the lessons with words (each lesson focuses on a sound of pinyin) I'll make
againstwinds word list it's own lesson.

simonlaing >> Thanks for the links, I'll be sure to make use of them.

The most valuable thing you are ever likely to read about the third tone comes from
汉语语音教程, by 曹文, BLCU (ISBN: 7-5619-1057-6), which was recommended originally by
Carlo way back when the Earth was young.

I seem to have temporarily mislaid my copy, so let me recall, translate and paraphrase all in one.
I'm sure I don't have it exactly right, so blame me not 曹文.

Quote:

The characteristics of the third tone are long, low and flat. In certain cases, the speaker may
raise their voice at the end, but this sounds exaggerated and is used for emphasis.

anonymoose -

I don't have any references, but as far as I understand it, the 3rd tone is only pronounced in its
entirety when it is the last syllable in a sentence. Otherwise, in mid sentence, the rising part
is cut-off, leaving just the low falling part, which can very nearly be approximated to a low
level tone.

HashiriKata -

It's useful to remember that the changes necessary for, and problems associated with, the 3rd tone
are due to the fact that at full value, this tone is twice as long as other tones.

duaaagiii -

I myself generally pronounce the third tone as a low falling tone, even at the end of a sentence
(except, for instance, when imitating people from China). It's typically okay to use a low falling
tone when a full third tone is called for, but it is not okay to do the opposite.

<<恒心>> -

Hero Doug:

The point about the half-third tone being a tone that drops and stays low has already been made,
and it's a critical one. But would a good visual help cement it further (or would that be
画蛇添足?) Anyway, for what it's worth, this open source chart via Wikipedia might set it in
your mind in another way:

Hero Doug -

Thanks all for the confirmations.

Roddy, I'll take a look into that book you posted when I'm done the set I'm working on now.

Now I've seen the length of time a tone should be said mentioned a few times. As far as I
understand the tones are to be said differently with regards to duration.

Third, first, second, fourth - from longest to quickest.

I also assume the time difference from one to another is just enough to notice there is a time
difference.

How accurate is this?

Xixia Dinosaur Park open to visitors

www.chinanews.cn 2006-07-19 09:07:43

The picture shows two dinosaurs fighting against each other in the Xixia
Dinosaur Ruins Theme Park in Henan Province. The park, the first of its
kind in China, opened to the public on July 6, 2006. The fossils of
dinosaur eggs discovered in Xixia were such well preserved that they were
even addressed as the ninth miracle after the terra-cotta worriors.

Chinanews, Zhengzhou, July 18 - The second Chinese dinosaur theme park
after Zigong Geological Park of Dinosaurs and Other Ancient Creatures in
Sichuan Province, Xixia Dinosaur Park in Henan Province is now open to
the public.
The park consists of four parts, the Geological Knowledge Square,
Dinosaur Egg Fossil Museum, Dinosaur Garden and Dinosaur Site. In the
museum, visitors will not only see the fossils but also learn a lot of
paleontological knowledge via multi-media ways. However, the Dinosaur
Site is actually the most important place to visit, as here is where the
Chinese legend originates.
The Dinosaur Site in Xixia belongs to the stratum of the Cretaceous
Period, where more than 1,000 dinosaur egg fossils can be found,
according to experts estimate at least 16 stratums of egg fossils. Now it
is confirmed that the eggs found here belong to dinosaurs of 13 species
of 7 genera of 4 families. The giant egg fossils, each more than 50 cm
long, which have been found nowhere else, have become the symbol of the
Xixia Dinosaur Site. The egg fossils in Xixia are not only famous for the
great quantity, but also for the miraculously perfect preservation.
Besides the egg fossils, the bones of the dinosaurs found recently add to
the precious collection in Xixia. Maybe one day Xixia will become the key
for people to solve the mystery of dinosaurs extinction.

Housing guideline confusion cleared

www.chinanews.cn 2006-07-14 09:37:26

(Source: China Daily)

July 14 - The Ministry of Construction Thursday moved to clear confusion
over its new housing development guidelines.
To increase the number of affordable homes and curb soaring prices, the
State Council said that from June 1, homes smaller than 90 square metres
must account for at least 70 per cent of the total space of residential
housing development projects.
However, there has since been no explanation specifying the "90 square
metres" and "70 per cent" rules, which many believe are too ambiguous.
For example, in many regions, an apartment of 90 square metres could mean
90 square metres of "usable" area, while in fact it is measured at 110
square metres roughly in floor area.
Such ambiguities have partly delayed the implementation of the measures
in most cities and have been perplexing the real estate market, Xinhua
News Agency reported yesterday.
The ministry Thursday made it clear that the 90 square metres include
both the usable floor space and the shared public space in a residential
building.
With regard to the proportion of the smaller houses, the ministry
clarified that homes smaller than 90 square metres must account for at
least 70 per cent of the total floor space of any new residential
building.
It also said the land planned for medium and low price commercial houses
must be mainly reserved for the building of homes smaller than 90 square
metres. The ratio of such homes must not be breached. Developers must get
ministry approval if they change such ratios, the ministry said in a
circular issued Thursday.

China moves to control oversupply in steel

www.chinanews.cn 2006-07-01 16:36:11

(Source: Xinhua)

July 1 - The Chinese government has announced new policies to counter the
serious problem of oversupply in the steel industry.
The new policies will result in the closure of factories with low
productivity and the scrapping of out-of-date equipment.
The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the country's
industrial watchdog, on Friday made public a notice on controlling steel
output.
According to the notice, during the 11th five-year period (2006-2010),
the elimination of out-of-date iron-smelting equipment and factories in
China will reduce steel productivity by 100 million tons.
Before next year, the removal of redundant equipment will reduce
production by 55 million tons.
Statistics from the NDRC showed that of the total 420 million tons of
steel produced in China in 2004, about 100 million tons were made by
low-productivity blast furnaces, about 27 percent of the total output.
About 13 percent of the total output, about 55 million tons, was produced
by small converter and electric furnaces under 20 tons in weight.
All this equipment, which consumes a lot of energy and causes serious
pollution, will be scrapped under the new regulations.
The NDRC notice also revealed the restructuring of the country's major
steel-production bases. China plans to develop Caofeidian, an island 80
km south of Tangshan in Beijing's neighboring province of Hebei, into a
new major steel base.
By 2010, Beijing's leading steel maker Capital Iron and Steel Group Co.,
will be located there which will mean the steel giant, regarded as one of
Beijing's worst polluters, will end all production in the capital.
The NDRC said the relocation model of steel companies in Beijing will be
followed by other cities, in order to develop more new steel bases in
China in the future.
Some steel companies will also be regrouped into larger ones that are
capable of competing in the world market.
According to the notice, two or three 30-million-ton level steel
companies will be formed in China under the new adjustments, in addition
to a large number of large steel companies each capable of producing more
than 10 million tons of steels a year.
The NDRC is hoping that the total output of the country's top ten steel
makers will account for more than half of the national total output.
According to the NDRC, most of China's out-of-date steel and iron
equipment and factories are located in the country's northern and eastern
regions, and the provinces of Hebei and Shanxi in north China assembled
about 68.7 percent of China's low-productivity iron-smelting factories.
Sources with the NDRC said that by the end of May this year, 21 blast
furnaces with a total production capacity of 3.5 millions, and 12 small
converters with a total capacity of 2.6 million tons have been retired in
Hebei province.

China steel mills accepts 19% ore price hike

www.chinanews.cn 2006-06-21 09:11:13

(Source: Xinhua)

June 21 - Chinese steel mills on Tuesday accepted a 19 percent price hike
on iron ore after extended negotiations with the world's three biggest
miners.
Baosteel, the nation's largest steel producer that is representing
Chinese steelmakers, reached the agreement with Anglo-Australian mining
firm BHP Billiton, a source with Baosteel said Tuesday.
Baosteel reached similar agreements with Australia's Rio Tinto Group and
Brazil's Companhia Vale do Rio Doc (CVRD), but the details would be
released on Wednesday and Thursday respectively, said the source.
CVRD and German steel producer ThyssenKrupp AG on May 16 initiated the
19-percent rise in contract prices of iron ore.
Chinese steel mills have hoped to secure a lower price increase after
being forced to accept a 71.5 percent hike last year.
However, many steel producers around the world had agreed to the price
hike, severely undercutting the Chinese bargaining position.
The China Iron and Steel Association (ISA) said earlier that setting the
price without considering the market in China, the world's biggest buyer
of iron ore, was unacceptable.
Failing to lower the price, Chinese steelmakers have expressed explicit
demands for considering the Chinese situation while setting the iron ore
price and improving the negotiation mechanism, which they claim has
obvious problems and flaws.
They also stressed during the negotiations that the supply and demand of
iron ore on the world market should be based on firm long-term
cooperation.
CVRD representatives said Chinese mills would be able to play a bigger
role in future negotiations, taking into account China's market scale.
BHP Billiton has forecast that a large proportion of the growing demand
for iron ore in the world market would come from China, and the Chinese
market could not be underestimated.
The ISA has pledged to strengthen administration of the iron ore trade,
regroup the iron and steel industry and eliminate out-dated production
capacity in order to stabilize supply and demand.

Preliminary testing of AIDS vaccine satisfactory

www.chinanews.cn 2006-06-12 09:20:57

(Source: Xinhua)

A woman volunteer gets a dose of HIV/AIDS vaccine in Nanning, Guangxi
Zhuang Autonomous Region on March 12, 2005.

June 12 - Chinese researchers say they have obtained satisfactory results
through preliminary clinical testing of the safety of an AIDS vaccine
developed by China.
The test concluded as the last 15 people of the 49 volunteers who were
injected 15 months ago with the AIDS vaccine, China's first, on Sunday
passed health checkups at Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Regional Center of
Diseases Control.
"Currently, data based on clinical observations have shown everything is
normal and we are confident that the AIDS vaccine issafe," said Chen Jie,
deputy head of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Regional CDC.
A panel of experts will make a further assessment into the experimental
outcome and decide whether to carry out the second phase of the AIDS
vaccine test, Chen said.
The assessment will cover the dose and safety of the AIDS vaccine,
immunization procedures and whether the safety of the experiment accords
with the targets for clinical research set by the state, Chen said.
The Ministry of Science and Technology and the State Food and Drug
Administration will decide whether to go ahead with the second phase of
the test based on the assessment outcome.
The first phase of the test was launched in Nanning, capital ofGuangxi,
on March 12 last year, and the 49 volunteers, all Chinese and aged
between 18 and 50, had received vaccine rejection by October 20 last year.
They were divided into eight groups. Six groups received a single AIDS
vaccine and two other groups were injected with a combined AIDS vaccine.
If the test enters the second phase, more volunteers will be recruited
from larger groups, especially from the high-risk groups,Chen said.
The State Food and Drug Administration approved the first clinical phase
research of the new AIDS vaccine on Nov. 25, 2004.
China currently has approximately 650,000 HIV carriers, including
approximately 75,000 AIDS patients, according to recent official
estimates.
